Wastewater W̶e̶d̶n̶e̶s̶d̶a̶y̶ Thursday: 3/20/25

Is anyone else counting down the minutes until spring break? Everything is just so MUCH lately. This is going to be a short one today, but here's the scoop because the 💩 doesn't lie!

COVID

COVID-19 Wastewater Surveillance in Wisconsin graph. 2 sites are reporting a significant increase. The decline has stopped, and the preliminary data is showing a slight increase in the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in the wastewater.
Statewide wastewater data from https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/covid-19/wastewater.htm

Statewide in Wisconsin, the decline in our COVID levels has, unfortunately, come to a stop. Fortunately, we aren't (yet) seeing increases in the biggest sewersheds like Milwaukee and Madison (Milwaukee South Shore had me worried for a couple days there though!). But it's looking like we might have hit the bottom, and unfortunately that "bottom" is a significantly higher level of transmission than the previous two lulls.

If we're lucky, it will be a temporary pause, and then the decline will continue into the summer. If we're not...well...

Here's the thing. Next week is Spring Break for a lot of school districts. And while I may be spending it asleep on the couch*, a LOT of people travel. On planes. And you know what else likes to travel on planes?

SARS-CoV-2.

Over 96% of flights sampled had SARS-CoV-2 in their wastewater.

So if you're going somewhere, and you don't want illness to wreck your vacation, mask up, ESPECIALLY in the airports and on your flight.

*My kids no doubt have other ideas.
